HARD DRIVING – ALBUM OF THE MONTH – LINK MAGASINE
"This 8 track album by Sam Payne is stripped down stuff - Sam plays piano and sings - no frills. She has her own voice and plays piano with fire, brimstone, light and shade. She seems to take inspiration from the early pioneers Albert Ammons and Pinetop Perkins via relatively recent innovators such as Mac Rebenack to create a very personal style. The straight ahead boogie of "45 in My Hand" to the backbeat of "Dodge it and Scarper", the Ketty Lester style blues of "Bad Luck Blues", the Cotton Club style of "Set You Up", the classic High Heel Sneekers riff of "Glutton for Punishment", Sam plays with a driving left hand and rare rhythmic sense. Combined with a no nonsense sultriness to her voice and this album is really memorable"
HARD DRIVING- Blues In Britain.
"In Sam Payne we have a chance to prove our daring curiosity. Not that we are given long to contemplate defying convention. (Probably a good thing – hersy is easier when instinctive). Hard Driving maybe short but its not slight. Indeed, it is the brevity that give is sharpness. The release is well named. For description of the ivory tinkling I can think of nothing more accurate than the title. It has a pure yet lilting quality akin to the feeling of riding the crest of a good drink. Payne’s voice, meanwhile, is as smoky as a jazz club at closing time and as full bodied as a Rubens muse. This is a composition of simplicity. There is one performer, her voice and her piano. That’s it. Anything more would be superfluity. Instead, there is purity, purity so compelling it might just force Jool’s into the slow lane". Jonathan Blackstaffe."A YOUNG TALENT WHOSE MUSIC IS SOAKED IN SOPHISTICATION YET HOT ENOUGH TO FIRE ALL EMOTIONS". Daily Mail. UK.
"SAMANTHA PAYNE SAT ALONE AT HER PIANO, A SMALL FIGURE WITH A VOICE SHE HAD CLEARLY BORROWED FORM SOMEONE TWICE HER SIZE. FOR ME, SAMS WAS THE CLOSEST TO MY PREFERRED STRAIN OF BLUES THAT I SAW, WITHOUT DECRYING ANY OF THE OTHER ACTS. SHE HAS A RAW AND NATURAL PRESENCE THAT SPILLS OUT THROUGH HER SET OF ORIGINAL MATERIAL". Manchester Evening Post. UK.
"AT AN AGE WHEN MOST KIDS ARE OBSESSED WITH POP SAM PAYNE WAS PLAYING BOOGIE- WOOGIE AND BLUES PIANO. SHE SOON EARNED A REPUTATION AS A LEADING EXPONENT OF BRITISH BLUES BUT NOW HAS A MORE CONTEMPORARY, SLINKY JAZZ STYLE AS A SINGER AND KEYBOARD PLAYER". The Daily Mail. UK.
